Autobiography by Evan Harr

My name is Evan Harr and I am 17 years old. I live in California with my mom, dad, and sister. I like to skateboard, play video games, and go to the beach. I really enjoy the area I live in. In the near future, I will be graduating high school and going off to college. I think college will be a lot harder and more stressful than high school. Getting used to it will be a lot different then getting used to high school. I feel like it would be a whole new experience because it would have a bigger campus, a higher workload, and a lot of new people. I’ve never really been told anything about college, and it would probably be pretty hard to just jump into it.
Anyways, this is my 4th semester at SOAR. I am graduating high school at then end of this semester and I really enjoy it here. It is a really cool school to go to because of all the awesome places you go to while working on school work. I also really enjoy the teachers at the North Carolina base. SOAR is like my home away from home. I’ve done crazy things with this school that I have never done before in my life, and most people dream to do these kinds of things. It is also a good program because they help you with anything, whether it is mentally, physically, or academically. I have enjoyed my two years here, no matter how hard it seems to get. I am looking forward as to what the future has in store for me.

Expedition 1 by Evan Harr

We started out our expedition by landing in Las Vegas. Jeremy picked us up and we headed to our campground in Red Rocks. We went rock climbing the next day and I made it to the top of both walls! After we were done with that, we took a long drive to a campground right outside the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. After we got ready for the back country, we went hiking down into the bottom of the Grand Canyon the next day. We got to stay there for three nights and it was a fun experience hiking down from the opposite side this time. We stayed at a campsite really close to the Colorado River and right next to a creek. It was called Bright Angel Campground, and it was a really fun one to stay at. One of the days, we got to go down to the boat beach nearby and do our schoolwork. There was a lot of wildlife at the Grand Canyon, especially mule deer. I saw quite a few deer as we were hiking and camping. They were staring at me from literally just a few feet away. There were also squirrels and birds that were very cool looking.
The second part of the expedition, we camped out of the van. We were finally able to do our laundry. We went to Petrified Forest National Park. We listened to a Ranger talk about fossilized clam bed, how the wood became petrified, layers of the rocks, how the dinosaurs lived there, and rocks with petrified drawings on it. After the Ranger Talk, we watched a movie about the Petrified Forest.
I can’t wait for the next expedition with Anne and Eric!

                                           Autobiography

By: Miles Gibson

Well I was born in my house in Asheville, North Carolina. I was born with a best friend for life, Atley and she is still my best friend. When I was about 5 or 6, I moved not too far away in to Candler, North Carolina right across the street from my soon to be middle school, Enka middle. Very shortly after I moved into my new house my sister was born, we grew up in this new house we got along good, sometimes other times not so well. I broke her leg when she was about three by pushing her off the bed and she hasn’t forgiven me for it. In elementary school I had a new friend that stayed for about 2 years Tristan Turner, him and I were awesome friends and we had a lot in common. But our friendship wasn’t so strong once I got into 6th grade. Once I got to the 6th grade I met one of my bests friend Callum. I remember very specifically what happened, I was sitting in lunch and I saw him. He looked pretty miserable. I could tell he was new so I said hey. He said hey back and then we started hanging out, and we’re still friends’. In those 3 years of middle school I met lots of other good friends. Unfortunately 8th grade would be an extreme low for me; I was an extremely bad student partially because I was hanging out with the wrong crowd, and partially because I hated my teachers, and was lazy. So as a result I made ds and f’s and barely passed the 8th grade. Luckily I did well on the big test at the end of the year. During summer, I went to my first course with SOAR were I realized my potential for academics and did lots of fun things, like caving, and climbing. After I got back I began testing for my drivers permit. After I was done with my first day Callum visited me and I studied using his help, then I started screwing around and I broke my wrist so I don’t have my permit yet. Almost right after my arm healed, I went to my first soar semester course in Yellowstone and the Rockies Nat’l Park. It was a pretty poor functioning group but we got better towards the end. Then I got a 1 month break, and now I’m back for my second semester with soar.

                                Blog                           1-24-12                     Miles Gibson

Well we came back to SOAR early in January and since then we’ve all been having a lot of fun together. We started our first expedition a few days after we arrived. We started the ex by landing in Las Vegas and then making our way to Red Rocks were we did some rock climbing. That was a blast to do It was one of the biggest climbs I’ve ever done and I’m told it was one of the hardest rated climb so I’m happy about that. I climbed two different routes two different times a piece.
Afterwards we went to the Grand Canyon Nat’l Park which I did earlier the month before with my last SOAR group, except it was the north rim. This time it was the south rim. We hiked 18 miles total over 4 days down and up.
We then went to the Petrified Forest Nat’l Park which was a site to behold. It was really dry and void of life but within the desert there were amazing works of nature. The Petrified Forest has its name due to the wood that has been turned into a mineral over years and years of it being mixed and compressed with ash, mud, and water. The wood had amazing feel and look to it, you could still see the rings on the wood that have been replaced beautiful rock.
Afterwards, we then headed to a KOA campground were we slept there for 2 nights. Most of that time was spent doing school, but we found time for fun on the play ground were we spun on the Roundy round and what not.
After that we went to another campground in outside of Phoenix, Arizona called lost Dutchman’s campground, which has a story of treasure and a curse behind it. We did more school there but due to good behavior we got a reward of cookies, and a fire, where we had our nightly meeting and had a good time.

We then made it back to North Carolina.

Thomas Kelly ~Expedition 1~

This is the first post on my blog; so let me enlighten you about my first expedition at SOAR. We first began our trip by flying out to Las Vegas on 1/10/12, where we spent 2 nights at Red Rock, and went rock climbing. Our group then traveled to the Grand Canyon. We first spent one night on the rim before starting our eight-mile hike into the canyon. After our eight-mile hike we spent two nights in the bottom of the canyon. On the third day we knocked out five out of our ten miles out of the canyon. And on the forth we finished the remaining 5 miles with ease. We then spent that night at the same spot on the rim as before. After our Grand Canyon adventure we spent three days and two nights at a KOA (Kamp Ground of America). Where we knocked out the remaining amount of our schoolwork. Our final stop before our return flight to base was to stay in the state park of Phoenix, Arizona, where we spent one night.

Thomas Kelly ~Autobiography~

My name is Thomas Kelly.  I was born June 18th, 1993 in Raleigh N.C., and was adopted by Bill and Cathie Kelly from The Children’s Homes society. It was here in Raleigh, in which, I spent the first nine and a half years of my life.  I was enrolled in an elementary school called Root, which was a short six-minute walk from my home. In February 9th, 1999, another member was added to my family of three.  Thus we adopted Stuart, from the same place I was adopted from.  The summer in which I turned ten my family moved to Atlanta, Georgia where I currently reside.

Anyway, more about me, I am 18 years old, 6’3”, and 143 lbs.  I have blond hair and blue eyes.  I am currently a senior in high school at SOAR academy.  My main interests in life revolve around music.  I both sing and play guitar, which I first started doing about six years ago.  After discovering my love of music I quickly began to look into music-based colleges.  I was accepted to both Greensboro College and Catawba College, each with scholarship. For Greensboro I received a $12,000 scholarship and for Catawba I received a total of a $21,500 scholarship.  It was a no brainer that I would indeed pursue Catawba, where I will begin in the Fall of 2012.

As far as my music experience I have written several songs both for electric and acoustic guitars.  I then began to work with several local bands in G.A., which I started to manage.  Although I was not performing with these bands I never faltered to find time to practice and keep myself dedicated to playing guitar.  Later on I started to fiddle with my personal guitars and quickly began to find that I had a knack for building and upgrading guitars.  And thus, the start of my love for building and working on guitars began.

The goals I have in life now consists of finishing college with a triple major, continue from college into the music industry, and to be able to support myself and the possibility of a family of my own in the future.

Story-Part One:
Spring Winds

The dawn was just waking over the Valley of the Sorrows, as the night was just whispering away in its long slumber.
Over distant mountains far in the distance, the radiant sun rose up over the mountains, climbing through the cloud-speckled-sky on warm wings.
As the night fled and morning rose beams of sunlight speared through the cloud-cover. Even though it only got through in small shafts of light, the jade green grass below the clouds sparkled like diamonds in the sunlit shafts.
The whole fields exploded into sparkling fields of green hues and shades of yellow flowers, dewdrops covered every petal and every stem.
Spider webs coated in mist lit up like fireworks  born of glass, and the misty air flew with purple, blue and green colors, rainbows dancing in every direction, flowing over the hills, valleys, and meadows-bursting through the forest plains- and trumpeting the arrival of the glorious dawn once more.
Forest creatures: Rabbits, Foxes, and Bob-cats, squirrels, and birds called to each other as the sunlight broke through the clouds above, reaching to every corner of the land, to the north, south, east and west, every direction was hit with shafts of light.
The green fields were unjustly titled so it would seem, the Valley of the Sorrows, such a tepid name for such  vibrant flowing field of green and rolling hills, covered in an endless sea’s of color, home to forests and meadows of grass, flowers, rivers and streams aplenty.
However, looking upwards showed one the sadness, the sky, forever contrasted with a quilt of grey clouds glaring downwards at the sea of green grass and yellow flowers.
It would attack the ground with water and lightning from time-to-time, but this only strengthened the grasses’ numbers, as it laughed off the skies petty raids.
It smiled off the skies’ anger and fury with life and growth, unmolested by sheep and cattle.
The land of the sorrows was a place of unequal beauty as it was a place of unequal malice in the past.
-Lush green forests, deep oceans, and planes of never ending grass that spanned for miles on end, with lakes overflowing in deep pockets in the land in the valley.
Bordering the grass planes, there is a wall, a stone wall, a cliff barring the grass from going any further.
This cliff face of solid grey stone is 68 feet high off the ground; it stretches for miles in all directions, the top of it, etched with cracks and scratches.
Its tall spear-like towers of stone stung the sky.
Climbing into the sky for miles, they cut upwards into the clouds -through the clouds, up and beyond.
The towers never seemed to end in the sky, but back on the surface of ‘the wall’ the only thing that ran over its surface are hot streams, natural hot springs running up through the cracks, running along depressions in the surface, and then over the edge in never ending floods of waterfalls, spilling over into the grass planes.
Were the water fell small ponds formed, made out of clear water, residing in tubs of solid grey stone that had been cleaned of grass until even the stone had been pounded for so long that shallow depressions in the stone ground were eroded away until the formed small ponds that caught the runoff, creating warm pools of clear water.
Surrounding these hot-tub sized springs surrounded by stone ground, are walls shaped like a bowl, large, naturally formed depressions in the earth, covered in grass reaching up to the edges of the stone in a semi-circled shape, each end touching the wall.
The ‘bowl’ was clouded in light foggy steam, as the frigid air met the warm water steam blew off into the bowl, it was contained and trapped like a fine curtain running along the ground.
These depressions, craters some may say, can be large and small, all dotted along the end of the grass valley and start of the stony, barren landscape of unknown length.
Sometimes trees would surround the bowl shaped craters, bushes as well, birds and animals meandered along the sides of the valley, stark shadows flowing smoothly through the fog in the distance.
bees, and ants, moths and butterflies, fish, mammals, deer and elk and other things were commonly seen, though everything else was gone with the ever fleeting wind, or never there in the first place it would seem, empty, it would be thought that such a large place would house millions of different species, but the only things seen were elk, deer, fish in the streams, rabbits, foxes, bobcats, and birds, bugs, snakes and lizards, frogs and turtles, and that was all that was ever found.
It was as strange and mysterious as it was breathtaking. It was quiet, and peaceful, but eerie all the same.
Its silence, save for the rustle of leaves, buzz of bees, rush of water, and whoosh of wind was all that echoed through the land.
It has been this way ever since the great stones rose out of the ground.
The stony cliffs that used to not be there…

Andrew Sanchez, and his things

For the past 2 Weeks we toured the backlands of Arizona. Our first stop after we got off the plane was the Walmart in Las Vegas. We bought supplies (food, gas, etc.), and then continued
onto our campsite, RedRock. The First Night was horrid. We were unprepared, and cold. Since we were in a desert-like area, the ground lost warmth quickly, and the winds began
to roar. The next day was our first "real" day. We went Rock climbing at Red Rock(not our campsite, but other Rocks that happened to also be red). We then took about a 5 hour
Road Trip to  a more "Foresty" location. There were Patches of snow and ice on the floor and the snow sparkled with my golden "A". After this relaxing trip, we Tromped into the
Grand Canyon. The First eight miles were all downhill, and at first we were practically rolling down the passbacks, but then someone decided shuffling was faster than Walking.
It was  not. We got to our first campsite(bright angel) at around 8 or 9, and everone but I(and Evan) collapsed. I had to cook, but we had forgot to bring a can opener. Nonetheless, Erik was
determined to eat pasta AND red sauce. He took out his knife, more specifically his plier tool, and proceeded to attack the can. We had our Pasta and sauce for dinner later. The
next day was fantastic. We had lunch, and relaxed on the shore of the Roarin' Colorado River. The next day was spent hiking, uphill for about 4.7 miles, until we reached our
beutiful destination, Indian Gardens. Here, Birds were named Cookies, and Kindles were broken, but it was still a wonderful place. Our next hike was about the same distance, but
was much steeper. The first 3, or so miles were hard, but the worst had not yet showed itself. I have yet to mention, that while we were at the Bright Angel Campsite, it rained.
Higher atitude=Colder air. Snow, is what made the last part of our trek so frustrating. After we escaped from the canyon, we all stuffed our faces with blueberry bagels, and
synthetic honey. We returned to the "foresty" compsite, and took showers. The Showers were Fantastic, though only Eight minutes long. We then moved to a K.O.A(Kampground
of America) and there was a Roundy-Round. the Roundy-round was phantasmagorical , and i dont just call anything phantasmagorical . Our first day of Staying at K.O.A, we went
to the Petrified "forest". It was a desert, not a Forest. after that day we took another 5 hour Road trip to Pheonix, more specifically the "Lost Dutchman" road. Our campsite was
Occupied by Attacking Cacti, and sand. Our next day was when we got on our plane, and Returned to Base.

Mitchell Harrison Blog

We went to red rock canyon and went rock climbing with Jeremy.
Then we drove to the Grand Canyon for four days. Then we hiked in the Grand Canyon and after we got out went to Petrified Forest National Park and had a ranger talk.  Then we went to Newspaper Rock and looked at it. Then one of the days on the expedition we went to a Ko8 campground of America and they had a playground there and a toy digger machine that I got to play on. Then we stayed at the ko8 for two nights and we did laundry and school work there. Then we drove outside of Phoenix to stay at Lost Dutch Man National Park for one night. On the last night of expedition we had sugar cookies and a fire at our campsite. Then the next day we packed up our sleeping bags and put them into the trailer and then we drove to the Phoenix airport to fly back to the base in North Carolina. I had a fun time with Anne and Eric and the group on this expedition in the Grand Canyon.

My Expedition Experience by PJ Perlitz

Even though hiking and the out doors isn't my favorite, there were many things I enjoyed on the expedition. First, I really liked going to Red Rocks in Vegas and doing rock climbing. I was hesitant to try it but when I did I made it all the way to the top. Next, we traveled to The Grand Canyon in Arizona. The hiking was not my favorite but I loved seeing the sights. We hiked from The South Rim to Phantom Ranch it was quite a work out. We hiked 18 miles total and in the end it was a great accomplishment. We stayed in there for four days and the group had a lot of great moments. After that, we stayed at a camp site that had a playground. The whole group enjoyed playing on the roundy round. After camping at that site we went to The Petrified Forest. We saw tons of petrified wood and even got to talk to a ranger. The ranger taught us about how the wood became petrified and about what The Petrified Forest used to be. We learned a lot and even wrote a few science journals. Last, after The Petrified Forest we went to Newspaper Rock. We saw petroglyphs written by the Anasazis, There were so many cool writings. Then we camped out a few more nights and went back to North Carolina. Everyone in the group had a lot of fun and we really learned a lot.
